Your Body Clock According To Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that each organ has its point of highest energy and lowest energy.

Chinese Medicine practitioners use this clock to help them determine the organ responsible for the disease.

For example, if you find yourself waking up between the hours of 3am-5am each morning, you may have underlying grief or sadness that is bothering you or you may have a condition in the lung area.

If feelings of anger or resentment arise, you may feel them strongest during the time of the Liver which is 1am-3am or perhaps if you experience back pain at the end of your working day, you could have pent-up emotions of fear, or perhaps even kidney issues.

The diagram below shows the body clock in more detail:

organclock

This 24-hour cycle is believed to help us know when to exercise, eat, have sex, rest and sleep.  It also acts as a way to communicate with a particular organ or meridian (energy channel) of the body.

5am-7am is the time of the Large Intestine making it a perfect time to have a bowel movement and remove toxins from the day before.  It is also the ideal time to wash your body and comb your hair.  It is believed that combing your hair helps to clear out energy from the mind.  At this time, emotions of defensiveness or feelings of being stuck could be evoked.

7am-9am is the time of the Stomach so it is important to eat the biggest meal of the day here to optimize digestion and absorption.  Warm meals that are high in nutrition are best in the morning.  Emotions that are likely to be stirred at this time include disgust or despair.

9am-11am is the time of the Pancreas and Spleen, where enzymes are released to help digest food and release energy for the day ahead.  This is the ideal time to exercise and work.  Do your most taxing tasks of the day at this time.  Emotions such as low self-esteem may be felt at this time.

11am-1pm is the time of the Heart which will work to pump nutrients around the body to help provide you with energy and nutrition.  This is also a good time to eat lunch and it is recommended to have a light, cooked meal.  Having a one hour nap or a cup of tea is also recommended during this time.  Feelings of extreme joy or sadness can also be experienced at this time.

1pm-3pm is the time of the Small Intestine and is when food eaten earlier will complete its digestion and assimilation.  This is also a good time to go about daily tasks or exercise.  Sometimes, vulnerable thoughts or feelings of abandonment my subconsciously arise at this time.

3pm-5pm is the time of the Bladder when metabolic wastes move into the kidney’s filtration system.  This is the perfect time to study or complete brain-challenging work.  Another cup of tea is advised as is drinking a lot of water to help aid detoxification processes.  Feeling irritated or timid may also occur at this time.

5pm-7pm is the time of the Kidneys when the blood is filtered and the kidneys work to maintain proper chemical balance.  This is the perfect time to have dinner and to activate your circulation either by walking, having a massage or stretching.  Subconscious thoughts of fear or terror can also be active at this time.

7pm-9pm is the time of Circulation when nutrients are carried to the capillaries and to each cell.  This is the perfect time to read.  Avoid doing mental activities at this time.  A difficulty in expressing emotions may also be felt however, this is the perfect time to have sex or conceive.

9pm-11pm is the time of Triple Heater or Endocrine System where the body’s homeostasis is adjusted and enzymes are replenished.  It is recommended to sleep at this time so the body can conserve energy for the following day.  Feelings of paranoia or confusion may also be felt.

11pm-1am is the time of the Gall Bladder and in order to wake feeling energized the body should be at rest.  In Chinese medicine, this period of time is when yin energy fades and yang energy begins to grow.  Yang energy helps you to keep active during the day and is stored when you are asleep.  Subconscious feelings of resentment may appear during this time.

1am-3am is the time of the Liver and a time when the body should be asleep.  During this time, toxins are released from the body and fresh new blood is made.  If you find yourself waking during this time, you could have too much yang energy or problems with your liver or detoxification pathways.  This is also the time of anger, frustration, and rage.

3am-5am the time of the Lungs and again, this is the time where the body should be asleep.  If woken at this time, nerve soothing exercises are recommended such as breathing exercises.  The body should be kept warm at this time too to help the lungs replenish the body with oxygen.  The lungs are also associated with feelings of grief and sadness.

Acid Reflux or GERD Natural Remedies

Your stomach acid helps digest your food. This stomach acid is very strong – the same acidity as battery acid. While the stomach can handle this, the more sensitive esophagus cannot. When the stomach sphincter is too weak, stomach acid regurgitates up into the esophagus, and causes a burning sensation called Heartburn. While occasional heartburn is common, more frequent, ongoing heartburn may be Acid Reflux, or GERD. Symptoms of acid reflux include burning chest pain, sour taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, belching, hoarseness, and sometimes breathing difficulties. Acid Reflux symptoms are worse from lying down or bending over.

Acid Reflux may be caused by a poor diet with too much citrus, certain spices, and fatty or irritating foods. Check with your doctor as some medications promote acid reflux. Smoking, alcohol, coffee, and other foods will make Acid Reflux symptoms worse.

Doctor’s treatment for acid reflux usually entails antacids and proton pump inhibitors that stop or slow down stomach acid, which may cause nutritional deficiencies and contribute to osteoporosis and immune dysfunction. They especially reduce B vitamins, iron and calcium.

The goal from a natural perspective to help Acid Reflux is to first relieve symptoms with natural remedies, and then correct the dietary imbalances. Start with a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and mild meats such as chicken, turkey and fish, then add cell salts, homeopathy, and herbs to correct the underlying causes of acid reflux. Additionally, it is important to address stressful conditions in a person’s life.

Melasma Natural Remedies

Melasma is also called cholasma which is a hyper-pigmentation, usually on the face. It is sometimes called the pregnancy mask. Melasma is mostly seen in women. It is a brown discoloration of the skin.

Causes of melasma can come from a genetic tendency. During pregnancy it can appear and go away after giving birth. It may also be caused from estrogen-based birth control. Modern medicine considers melasma a cosmetic problem and treats the condition with toxic chemicals or lasers. It does not address underlying causes.

Natural remedies for melasma include two perspectives; 1) Chinese medicine considers brown spots of the skin as a liver issue, 2) Hormone imbalances are causing melasma because of the weak liver function. The liver and hormones in women need to be addressed and for normal function to return. When the liver functions better the melasma fades away. It usually takes several months for melasma relief as it takes time for removal of liver stressors.

Liver stressors include chemical birth control (talk to your partner about some non-chemical birth control); medications stress the liver to some degree or another (statin drugs for cholesterol are particularly problematic); the diet needs to be free of tobacco, less than 2 alcoholic drinks a week, no soda pop, coffee or black tea.

Natural remedies for melasma include supplements such as NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine) at 2 capsules 2 times a day for good liver function. Use the following natural supplements for melasma for several months.

Herbs for Melasma

Herbs are plants valued for their specific strengthening/ tonifying properties.

Natural Liver Cleanse Remedies

A healthy liver is essential for many important functions of the body. The liver must be healthy enough to detoxify the body from pollution as well as toxins in the food we eat and general operating (metabolism) by-products. When the liver functions well, it may facilitate weight loss as the fat cells release their stored toxins. You may need a liver cleanse if you feel grumpy, irritable or wake up tired most mornings.

Try to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Always start by eliminating tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea and fast foods.

Essential nutritional supplements for liver cleansing: NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) is my favorite liver detoxifying supplement as it helps the liver produce glutathione to facilitate detoxification.

Leg and Feet Swelling Natural Remedies

Leg and feet swelling, or edema, is an accumulation of liquid in the tissues between the cell spaces and may be annoying at first, but progress to a severe or debilitating problem. Signs include swelling or pitting of the skin where a finger indentation may last for a few seconds to minutes or longer. In most cases swelling of the legs is caused by (#1) a weakness of the kidneys; (#2) lymphatic congestion; (#3) heart valve weakness; or (#4) liver problems. Then there are rarer symptoms of asites, cancer, pulmonary edema, congestive heart failure, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or kidney failure, etc. More seriously, swelling of one particular leg, right or left, is important as well as leg swelling during morning or night. If the legs or feet are warm or cold, this also has significance. Swelling from vein enlargement is mostly one sided, pressure and pain sensitive and difficult to press. It is a circulatory problem and may be connected to hemorrhoids or varicose veins. Natural therapies may be very effective. Be sure to know the underlying problem.

Medical treatment for simple cases of leg and feet swelling (edema) include the use of diuretics and possibly potassium. While somewhat effective, they may produce dependence, cover other symptoms, damage the kidneys, or have other side effects and toxicity.

It is important to have the cause of leg and feet swelling diagnosed to rule out serious problems.

Naturally, we look for simple solutions first to leg and feet swelling, such as dehydration (not drinking enough water), side effects from medications you are taking, or not getting enough protein. It may also be due to constipation (not having at least one bowel movement a day).

For leg and feet swelling (edema) classification one must recognize the following criteria:

Kidneys: leg and feet swelling where the skin is warm and is already there in the mornings. Signs are seen in the face also swollen eyelids and puffiness of the back of the hands. It is mostly right sided.

Lymphatic congestion: first rule out the other causes. Swelling of feet and legs are at a normal temperature, not hot or cold, and could be either leg. We also see glands swelling in the groin, arms or head.

Heart problems: limbs are cold, and the swelling begins in the joint areas, goes to the feet and is mostly left sided.

Liver edema, also known as ASITES: before the leg and feet swelling begin the abdomen is enlarged, a water swelling, the navel is stretched where it is only seen as flattened spot. In opposition to the swollen abdomen the rest of the extremities look thin. With this process we often see a colon disturbance. Before the abdominal water swelling, we see and abdominal expansion swelling. It is often combined with constipation.

Diet for leg swelling: stop smoking, alcohol, caffeine, coffee, black tea, sodas, and processed foods.  Supplements to help with leg swelling (edema) include:

Coenzyme Q10 – 100 mg a day for heart care and protection.

Vitamin B6 is a mild natural diuretic when used at 50mg twice daily.

Hives Natural Remedies

Hives can come on sudden or have a gradual onset of blister or welt-like bumps on the skin. Hives may last from a few hours to several weeks. They usually only involve the top layer of the skin which is superficial and usually doesn’t affect deeper organs. It is thought to be a release of toxins to the surface of the body. Hives may also come as an allergic reaction and a release of histamine from mast cells. They are often itchy or painful.

The causes of hives most commonly known is from allergies to foods, chemicals plants, or medications. The most common medicine to bring on hives is antibiotics. A more serious form of hives involves deeper skin layers and can be seen in the mouth and may stop a person’s breathing, or become anaphylactic shock.

Modern medicine uses testing to determine that more serious problems are not involved. They often prescribe antihistamines or steroids such as prednisone to treat hives. Mostly, they wait for the hives to go away on their own. Note that all medications, over-the-counter and prescribed, stress the liver and cause varying amounts of toxicity.

Natural perspective on hives recognizes that there is an underlying problem of one or more organs. When a person produces hives, it is a visible sign that either the liver or the kidneys are not functioning optimally. This is not well known but is highly effective to treat the correct organ.

Hives mostly denote stress of the liver, especially since there are so many toxins in our environment. The liver is implicated especially when a person id grumpy, irritable, or angry. If you suspect the kidneys, you can expect abnormal urination patterns and fear or absent-mindedness.

Good results can be quite quick but the liver or kidneys take time (a few days to weeks) to become quite healthy.

One of the best ways to reduce the occurrence of hives is to eliminate tobacco, alcohol, fast foods, coffee, black tea, sodas, and dairy foods. This is also a good way to prevent hives.

There are a number of supplements to help avoid or prevent hives:

Quercetin taken on a regular basis will strengthen mast cells and reduce allergic reactions.

NAC (n-acetyl-cysteine) supports the liver and reduces mucus.

B-Complex supports the adrenals and nervous system.

Vitamin C with bioflavonoid supports the cellular cleansing and allergic reactions.

Natural Remedies for Eyes

Your eyes are the window to this beautiful world. You can have better vision naturally through a healthy diet, and using natural supplements.

Sometimes vision problems are hereditary, but oft times they come when we don’t want to “see something” we need to change in our lives. As this happens, the eyes weaken and we may need glasses, or some other visional aid. Modern medicine can do some amazing surgeries for a myriad of vision problems and injuries.

Watching too much television and computers may weaken eyes because we don’t look around and get the depth perception, so the eye muscles are not exercised like they should be.

Thousands of my clients over the years can attest to the value of eating healthy. It is great prevention for many health problems. Make sure your are eating a diet of pure and natural foods while staying away from tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea, soda, and fast food. In Chinese medicine, liver health is directly connected to the health of the eyes. These dietary recommendations benefit the liver, and therefore the eyes.

Supplements for the eyes include: Vitamin A (fish-oil based) is important to eye health. 10,000 IU per day is safe to use. Amazingly, it only takes one 25,000 IU capsule per year to save the sight of a child living in a third-world country. Lutein is a supplement that is rich in antioxidants for the eyes. Use 25-50 milligrams per day.
